Steve Tipps is a Senior Project Manager with Certrec’s Office of Licensing and Compliance Team. He has over 39 years of commercial nuclear plant experience ranging from start-up, outage management, and system engineering, to licensing and regulatory compliance.
An electrical engineer by education, Steve served 39 years at Southern Company’s Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant in roles of increasing responsibilities that included engineering and licensing, and involved the formation and development of the licensing and regulatory compliance functions at the station.
Steve has extensive experience regarding BWR plant systems, plant operation, and associated processes. His areas of strength include preparation and instruction in performance of operability determinations, reportability determinations, 10CFR50.59 evaluations, and licensing bases knowledge. He also served as Plant Review Board Chairman and provided effective oversight to the licensing and regulatory compliance functions at the Hatch station.
Steve has coordinated three 95001 and one 95002 Supplemental Inspections with successful results. He has extensive experience in effectively interfacing with NRC inspectors and NRC management in addressing operational issues from a regulatory perspective. Steve has developed and implemented strategies to successfully mitigate the significance of regulatory issues that resulted in the station remaining in Column 1 in the NRC Action Matrix when the findings were dispositioned.
Steve has been involved in industry activities such as the Region II RUG participation, BWROG support, and NEI initiatives as part of staying current with regulatory issues as they arise.
