Regulatory Due Diligence: Purchase of Generating Assets: Regulatory Due Diligence Review
Last month, we asked our audience which type of renewable energy relies on the difference between warm and cold water layers? Overall, the most voted answer was Tidal Barrage, with 37 percent of the vote. In second place, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and Wave Energy tied with 32 percent each. Finally, Offshore Wind received zero percent of the vote.
The correct answer is OTEC. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion works by exploiting the temperature difference between the warm surface water of the ocean and the colder deep water. The heat from the warm surface water is used to vaporize a working fluid (like ammonia), which drives a turbine to generate electricity. The cold deep water is then used to condense the vapor back into liquid so the cycle can continue.
