Carbon Free Future Saves Diablo Canyon

Great news for Diablo Canyon and our industry: Diablo Canyon, in the process of a permanent shutdown, just received news that the California Legislature has approved its continued and long-term operation.  As the state’s largest single source of electricity, this demonstrates the importance of nuclear to our carbon-free future. The last-minute proposal passed the state legislature early Thursday with strong support (31-1). This could allow Diablo Canyon to continue to operate for at least five years with the $1.4 billion forgivable loan provided in the bill. The bill now goes to Governor Newsom and is expected to be signed in to law.
