Siemens Energy is investing $1 billion to expand manufacturing capacity and workforce across multiple U.S. states as utilities and generators confront rapid growth in electricity demand tied to data centers, artificial intelligence and industrial electrification.
The company said the investment will support expanded production of grid equipment, large gas turbines and related components, and will create more than 1,500 manufacturing, operations and engineering jobs. The plans finalize expansion strategies outlined at Siemens Energy’s Capital Market Day in Charlotte, North Carolina, in November.
U.S. electricity demand growth is accelerating as hyperscale data centers and new industrial loads are added to the grid. Utilities and grid operators have warned that meeting this demand will require significant additions of transmission capacity, substations, transformers and dispatchable generation. Siemens Energy said the expansion is designed to address those needs through a combination of targeted brownfield expansions and one new greenfield facility.
The investment includes increased transformer manufacturing and servicing, expanded gas turbine production and upgrades to facilities that manufacture and service compression equipment used in gas and liquid pipelines. Siemens Energy said this approach allows it to scale output while making efficient use of existing manufacturing capacity.
A new high-voltage switchgear factory will be built in Mississippi’s Greater Richland Area. The facility is expected to employ up to 300 workers and include a training center focused on workforce development for grid equipment manufacturing.
In North Carolina, Siemens Energy plans to increase manufacturing and service capacity for large power transformers and resume gas turbine manufacturing in Charlotte. Additional gas turbine component production is planned in Winston-Salem, while Raleigh will see expanded grid technology engineering, project execution and research and development. The company said it expects to add about 500 jobs across those locations.
In Florida, Siemens Energy will expand its Tampa facility to increase production of gas turbine blades and vanes. The company also plans to upgrade research and development capabilities at its Orlando Innovation Center, including development of an artificial intelligence-focused digital grid laboratory, and relocate its U.S. headquarters to the Lake Nona area.
Additional investments include expanding production of copper and insulation electrical components for generators in Fort Payne, Alabama, creating about 120 jobs, and upgrading facilities in Painted Post, New York, and Houston, Texas, that support compression equipment manufacturing and servicing.
Alongside physical expansions, Siemens Energy said it will grow its apprenticeship programs and expand workforce training initiatives to support long-term labor needs across the power sector.
The company said the investments are intended to strengthen domestic supply chains for grid and generation equipment as utilities and developers move to add capacity and reinforce reliability amid sustained load growth.
